Manassas, VA — Manassas City Public Schools has named Dr. Donald Frischkorn, principal of Mayfield Intermediate School, as the division’s 2026 Washington Post Principal of the Year.
Each year, the division participates in the Washington Post Principal of the Year Awards, which recognize school leaders who demonstrate excellence in leadership, collaboration, communication, and a commitment to continuous learning. Honorees are selected based on their ability to inspire staff and students, foster strong school communities, and create environments where all learners can succeed. Dr. Frischkorn was selected as the division’s nominee and advanced for regional consideration. He was formally announced and recognized as the division’s winner on April 23.
Dr. Frischkorn has served as principal of Mayfield Intermediate School since July 2018. During his tenure, he has led efforts to strengthen student achievement, improve school climate, and build systems that support both academic and social-emotional growth. Under his leadership, the school has demonstrated sustained improvement in student outcomes, including gains in math and science performance, while maintaining a strong, positive school culture.
Known for his visible, hands-on leadership style, Dr. Frischkorn is a consistent presence throughout the school day, engaging with students and staff in classrooms, hallways, and common areas. His leadership emphasizes relationship-building, collaboration, and shared responsibility, creating an environment where staff and students are supported and connected.
Colleagues describe Dr. Frischkorn as “the heart of our school,” citing his ability to build a welcoming and inclusive culture. His leadership has been credited with cultivating a positive, innovative school climate and modeling “the kind of servant leadership that inspires excellence, not through authority, but through authenticity and connection.” He has also established clear expectations for a student-centered, learning-focused environment—and consistently models those values in his daily work.
Dr. Frischkorn’s path into education and leadership was shaped by early experiences with teachers and coaches who demonstrated the lasting impact educators can have on students’ lives. After beginning his career as a classroom teacher and coach, he was encouraged by mentors to pursue leadership, recognizing his ability to support both students and staff on a broader scale. That foundation continues to guide his work today, with a strong focus on ensuring students remain at the center of every decision.
“My leadership philosophy was shaped early in my career…all things are possible, all children will learn, and people make the difference,” Dr. Frischkorn said.
As principal, he emphasizes investing in people, building strong instructional teams, and creating systems that allow educators to meet the needs of all learners.
“This award is truly an honor, but I recognize that it reflects the collective efforts of many people in my life,” Dr. Frischkorn said. “This recognition is really a team achievement.”
His commitment to building a connected school community is central to his leadership. He said his goal is for every student and staff member to experience a sense of belonging and know that their contributions matter.
A particularly meaningful moment in his career came during a period of personal health challenges, when he observed the strength and resilience of the Mayfield community as staff continued to support students and each other. The experience reinforced his belief that strong schools are built through trust, collaboration, and a shared commitment to students.
Prior to joining Manassas City Public Schools, Dr. Frischkorn served in a variety of leadership roles, including assistant principal positions in Manassas Park City Schools and Fauquier County Public Schools. He began his career in education in 2005 as a fifth-grade language arts and math teacher.
Dr. Frischkorn holds a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Virginia, and a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from The Pennsylvania State University.
Dr. Frischkorn’s leadership reflects the qualities recognized by The Washington Post Principal of the Year Award, including a commitment to excellence, collaboration, and the success of every student.
Manassas City Public Schools congratulates Dr. Frischkorn on this recognition.
