The School Board of the City of Manassas held its annual organizational meeting on January 5, 2026, to complete required organizational business for the year, including the election of Board officers and annual appointments.
Board members elected Jill Spall to serve as Chair of the School Board and Dr. Zella Jones to serve as Vice Chair.
Spall, who previously served as Vice Chair, is grateful for the opportunity to continue serving the MCPS community in this new role.
“I strive to bring continuity, institutional knowledge, and thoughtful, steady progress to the work before us, always keeping our students at the center,” Spall said.
In addition, the Board approved several standard organizational actions:
Clerk and Deputy Clerk of the Board - Alba Garza will continue as Clerk of the Board, and Maureen Wilcoski will continue as Deputy Clerk.
Acting Superintendent Designees –In the absence of the Superintendent, Craig Gfeller, Deputy Superintendent, and Dr. Jennifer Cassata, Executive Director of Accountability and Finance, will continue to serve as designees.
Deputy Agents – Dr. Jennifer Cassata and Superintendent Dr. Kevin Newman were named Deputy Agents for the Board.
VSBA Voting Delegate – Board Member Diana Brown was appointed as the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) voting delegate, with Board Member Dayna-Marie Miles serving as alternate.
Meeting Calendar – The Board approved its meeting dates for the calendar year, which include regular meetings on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, with the exception of May, November, and December when they will meet for one regular meeting. Additional work sessions and special meetings will be scheduled and announced as needed.
These actions remain in effect until the next annual organizational meeting in January 2027.
