The Virginia Music Educators Association (VMEA) has named Osbourn High School a recipient of the 2025 Blue Ribbon Award—one of the highest distinctions a school music program can receive in the Commonwealth.
The Blue Ribbon Award recognizes schools whose top-performing ensembles in Band, Choir, and Orchestra earn “Superior” ratings at their respective state assessments. This year marks the third time in school history that Osbourn has earned this honor, with previous awards in 2019 and 2022.
“This award is a testament to the dedication of our student musicians and the exceptional leadership of our performing arts staff,” said Sarah Weaver, Fine and Performing Arts Coordinator for Manassas City Public Schools.
Choral Excellence:
Under the direction of Sherlee Glomb, both the Festival Mixed Choir and Festival Treble Choir received straight superior ratings from all four judges at the district assessment. Additionally, three students—Neila Abregro (Alto 1), Adrianna Willard (Soprano 1), and Isaac Quintanilla (1st alternate, Bass 1)—were recognized in the All-State Honor Choir audition process and will represent Osbourn in Richmond in April.
Orchestral Achievement:
Led by Latoya Lamons, Osbourn’s Symphonic Orchestra and Honors Chamber Orchestra earned straight superior ratings.
Band Distinction:
Directed by Andrew Wassum, the Osbourn Band Program achieved the criteria for recognition as a Program of Honor by the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association (VBODA). This dual honor is awarded when a school earns superior ratings in both Marching Band (Fall) and Concert Band (Spring). It is the fourth time Osbourn has received this distinction and the third time under Mr. Wassum’s leadership.
Dr. Kevin Newman, Superintendent of Schools, praised the achievement, saying, “This recognition reflects the high standards of excellence within our performing arts programs. It showcases the talent, dedication, and collaboration of our students and staff, and we are incredibly proud of what they have accomplished.”
With this collective success, Osbourn High School continues to demonstrate excellence in music education and performance, proudly representing Manassas City Public Schools on a state stage.
