The Virginia Department of Education recently announced $12 million in School Security Equipment Grants to 96 school divisions and 472 schools across the Commonwealth. Among the recipients, Round Elementary School and Haydon Elementary School were awarded a combined $250,000 to enhance safety measures for students, staff, and visitors at both schools.
These grants, awarded on a competitive basis, provide funding for modern security upgrades, including advanced communication systems, visitor ID systems, surveillance cameras, and other critical safety equipment. Schools selected demonstrated significant need for security enhancements, based on criteria such as audit findings, school offense data, and local financial capacity.
“The equipment purchased with these grants will help ensure the safety of all students and staff in Virginia’s public schools,” said Superintendent of Public Instruction Lisa Coons. “Every child deserves a high-quality education experience, one where they can deeply focus on learning and growing the minute they step onto a school bus or pass through the doors of their school. These grants help create safe, supportive environments, both on school grounds and while traveling to and from school.”
Prioritizing safety supports the mission of creating an environment where students can thrive academically and socially. These enhancements reflect the commitment to maintaining secure and welcoming schools.
