Virginia Retirement System - VRS

Membership in the Virginia Retirement System is mandatory for all regularly scheduled employees working 35 hours or more per week. VRS members are eligible to receive payments upon retirement and/or death. VRS retirement benefits are funded by contributions from its members and their employers.  

Virginia legislation requires public school employees who participate in the Virginia Retirement System to make contributions toward the VRS benefit costs. All MCPS employees participating in VRS will contribute the full 5% member contribution. VRS contributions are deducted on a tax deferred basis.

Plan 1 Member: You are in VRS Plan 1 if your membership date is before July 1, 2010, you have not taken a refund, and you were vested as of January 1, 2013. Please refer to the handbook here.

Plan 2 Member: You are in VRS Plan 2 if have not taken a refund and your membership date is from July 1, 2010 to December 31, 2013, or your membership date is before July 1, 2010, and you were not vested as of January 1, 2013. Please refer to the handbook here.

Hybrid Member: You are in VRS Hybrid plan if your membership date is on or after January 1, 2014. Please refer to the handbook here.

 **Hybrid Retirement Plan members may voluntarily contribute up to 4% of their creditable compensation each month to the defined contribution component of their retirement plan. They may increase their voluntary contribution elections on a quarterly basis.

To make a change you’ll just need to log in through Account Access, select Contributions for the Hybrid 457 Deferred Compensation Plan and click on Change My Contribution Amount. Or, you can call ICMA-RC Investor Services at 1-877-327-5261 (select option 1).
