Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, 20 U.S.C § 1681 et seq. (Title IX): "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." Moreover, the Virginia Human Rights Act, safeguards all individuals within the Commonwealth from unlawful discrimination because of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, status as a veteran, or disability in places of public accommodation, including educational institutions and in real estate transactions.

The School Board of the City of Manassas is committed to maintaining an educational environment and workplace that is free from harassment.  In accordance with law, the Board prohibits harassment against students, employees, or others on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, race, color, national origin, disability, religion, ancestry, age, marital status, pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions, status as a veteran, genetic information or any other characteristic protected by law or based on a belief that such characteristic exists, hereinafter referred to as protected group status, at school or any school sponsored activity. 

Members of the MCPS Title IX team are up to date on current guidelines and will continue to participate in training on such topics as the definition of sexual harassment; the scope of MCPS's education program or activity; how to conduct an investigation and grievance process, including handling issues of relevance and creating an investigative report; and how to serve impartially, including by avoiding prejudgement of the facts at issue, conflicts of interest, and bias.
