New Employee Orientation Class

New Employee Orientation Class

All teachers new to Manassas City engaged in four days of professional development that was designed based on feedback from teachers and administrators. Day one was focused on welcoming these new teachers into the Manassas community by taking them on a bus tour, teaching them about the history of Manassas City, and getting them into the cohorts that they will collaborating with all year. These cohorts consists of BT1 (Beginning Teacher Year 1) Teachers, NET (Newly Hired Experienced Teachers), new Special Education teachers, new ESOL teachers, and new counselors. These cohorts are part of the Teacher Education and Mentor (TEAM) program and provide targeted support throughout the year that meet the needs of each role.  A welcome luncheon was provided for new teachers to eat with building and division leaders, including Superintendent Dr. Kevin Newman.

On the second day of New Teacher Orientation, teachers participated in workshops that helped to “Plant the Seeds for a Successful Future.”  These workshops provided information on Google Drive, Outlook, PowerTeacher, Teacher Evaluation System, and PBIS.  Everyone was able to meet their mentor during the Mentor Mentee Luncheon then spend time getting their classroom set up for the year.

All teachers received training on the third day of New Teacher Orientation from their school based trainers on MCPS’s instructional framework, Learning Focused. MCPS was honored to host the author of Conscious Classroom Management, Rick Smith, for a workshop that was made possible due to a grant from Apple Federal Credit Union Foundation.  New teachers got to hear practical strategies for not only setting up their classroom and laying the foundation for a successful year, but how to maintain that positive classroom community throughout the year.
