Meeting Health Care Needs at School

MCPS encourages parents to meet a student’s health care needs at home.  If a student needs health services to be provided at school, (for example, but not limited to: medication administration, seizure precautions, catheterizations, gastric tube feedings, blood sugar checks, emergency action plans, or others), parents should schedule a time to meet with the school nurse to arrange for these needs to be taken care of during the student's school day.

Treatments & Procedures

Health care treatments and procedures require both a written physician's order and a parent/guardian's signature.  The school nurse will assist the parents/guardians by preparing an individual plan of care for the student and advising parents as to what supplies the student will need at school.

Medications

A new Medication Administration Authorization form is required to be completed at the beginning of each school year.  MCPS encourages parents to administer a student’s medication at home and, if possible, on a schedule other than during school hours. The first dose of any new medication should be given at home so that parents may observe the student for possible reactions. When medication is needed during school hours, the following procedures must be followed:

  • Prescription medication

    • There must be a completed Medication Administration Authorization form with both a healthcare provider's signature and a parent/guardian signature.

    • The medication must be in a current pharmacy-labeled container with the student's name and dosing instructions. All medications are to be brought to the school by a parent or guardian.

  • Over-the-counter medications

    • There must be a completed Medication Administration Authorization form with a parent/guardian signature.

    • Must be in an unopened sealed, original-labeled container with the name of the medication and expiration date clearly visible.

    • For a dose that is outside the manufacturer's recommended label directions, a doctor's order is needed for the OTC medication.

    • All medications are to be brought to the school by a parent or guardian.

  • Parents/ guardians are required to notify the school nurse of any change in medication, dosage, or time of administration of medication.
