English Language Arts and Literacy

The MCPS literacy program is built on the 2024 Virginia Standards of Learning and the Virginia Literacy Act, ensuring a strong foundation in the science of reading for all students, from kindergarten through grade 12. We provide a comprehensive, research-based continuum of literacy instruction that develops essential skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and information management. By integrating technology and evidence-based strategies, we equip students with the critical literacy skills needed for academic success and lifelong learning.

Grades K-6

Benchmark Advance, 2022 is the core High Quality Instructional Material used in grades K-6 per the MCPS Division Literacy Plan. Benchmark Advance, 2022 is an approved core literacy program based in scientifically based reading research and evidence-based literacy instruction, as defined by the VLA. Benchmark Advance, 2022 uses a knowledge-based framework to expand student comprehension in topic knowledge and vocabulary.

Students in grades K-3 (2024-2025) and K-6 (2025-2026) receive evidence-based supplemental instruction and intervention, as outlined in an individualized student reading plan, through the use of Lexia (approved HQIM for supplemental and intervention) if they do not meet literacy benchmarks indicated in VALLSS testing.

Grades 7-8

The middle school English curriculum builds students’ skills in reading, writing, speaking, vocabulary, and research through engaging, concept-based units. Using StudySync by McGraw Hill, as a primary curriculum resource, students explore a variety of grade-level texts and themes while developing critical thinking and communication skills. Classroom instruction includes a blend of direct teaching and cooperative learning, with technology integrated through Lexia to support reading instruction, remediation, and intervention. Student progress is monitored through teacher formative and summative assessments, as well as the Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA).

Grades 9-12

The high school English curriculum offers a comprehensive study of language and literature, preparing students in grades nine through twelve with essential skills in reading, writing, speaking, and research. Aligned with and exceeding the Virginia Standards of Learning, the curriculum integrates technology and multimedia to enhance learning. Teachers use a combination of explicit instruction and cooperative learning to engage students in meaningful discussions and critical analysis of texts, to develop strong communication skills, and to build a foundation for success in college, careers, and beyond. s. Reading remediation is provided through the online platform Lexia to support students in developing strong literacy skills.
