Health and Physical Education

Welcome to Physical Education. Please click on your grade level to the left to proceed. The VDOE physical education provides students with the knowledge, processes, and skills to become physically educated, physically fit and responsible in their physical activity choices and behaviors for a lifetime. Virginia's standards for physical education are grouped into five strands: skilled movement, movement principles and concepts, personal fitness, responsible behaviors and physically active lifestyle. The standards in each strand are sequenced to progress in complexity from grade level to grade level.

7th Grade

Health and Physical Education 7

Mission:  Based upon the acquisition on knowledge and skills that are the foundation for engaging in physical activity, our mission at Grace E. Metz Middle School is to empower all students to sustain regular, lifelong physical activity as a foundation for a healthy productive and fulfilling life. 

The Grace E. Metz Health and Physical Education curriculum is a sequential educational program based on activities undertaken in an active, caring, supportive and non threatening atmosphere in which every student is challenged and successful.  The aim of the program is to provide every student with a wide variety of physical activities and challenges that will contribute to the development and maintenance of their physical, cognitive and affective well-being.  Students will be provided with the foundation for making informed decisions empowering them to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

8th Grade

Health and Physical Education 8

The Grace E. Metz Health and Physical Education curriculum is a sequential educational program based on activities undertaken in an active, caring, supportive and non threatening atmosphere in which every student is challenged and successful.  The aim of the program is to provide every student with a wide variety of physical activities and challenges that will contribute to the development and maintenance of their physical, cognitive and affective well-being.  Students will be provided with the foundation for making informed decisions empowering them to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

During physical education classes students will continue to increase competence and confidence through versions of games, individual sports, team sports and other recreational activities while utilizing and expanding techniques and positive attitudes to improve personal fitness.  Students will advance their gross and fine motor skills, skilled movement, movement principles and concepts, and gain many health-related benefits while actively participating in physical education.  The class reflects the ever-changing stages of growth and development during the middle school years and is designed to give students lifelong benefits.  

Fitness Lifestyle Design

This course is designed to engage the whole child both in lifestyle choices, advocacy, and physical choices. Student explore the benefits of physical activity, mental wellness, social emotional supports, and develop podcasts to share their knowledge with peers. As part of the Fitness Lifestyle Design class students will participate in Peer Mentoring: Learners to Leaders - The Metz Middle School students will work toward becoming strong critical thinkers and problem solvers and being a positive role model for their young buddy students and peers.  When Teachers, Parents/Guardians, and students work together, students will grow academically and socially developing the confidence to be leaders in the school and community.
