English and Language Arts

Welcome to English Language Arts at  Metz Middle School. Please click on your grade level to the left to proceed. The Virginia Department of Education's (VDOE) English Standards of Learning is to teach students to read and to prepare students to participate in society as literate citizens, equipped with the ability to communicate effectively in their communities, in the workplace, and in postsecondary education. As students progress through the school years, they become active and involved listeners and develop a full command of the English language, evidenced by their use of standard English and their rich speaking and writing vocabularies.

English 7

The English 7 curriculum teaches students to develop their reading, writing, critical thinking, vocabulary, and collaboration skills. Over the course of the year, students will review the literary characteristics of fiction; broaden their appreciation of stylized literary devices through all genres; review the characteristics of nonfiction; analyze a variety of literature across different genres; and write structured, organized paragraphs and essays to address different topics.

English 8

The English 8 curriculum challenges students to develop their reading, writing, critical thinking, research, and collaboration skills. Over the course of the year, students will review the literary characteristics of fiction; broaden their appreciation of stylized literary devices; review the characteristics of nonfiction; analyze a variety of literature across different genres; and write structured, organized essays to address different topics.
