MCPS Conducts Water Quality Tests
August 10, 2016 . . . Across the nation, there has been increased interest regarding water quality, and more specifically, the presence of lead in water. Although there is no state or federal requirement to test for lead in schools supplied by a public water system, Manassas City Public Schools (MCPS), with the assistance of the City of Manassas Utilities Department, conducted water tests as a precautionary measure to further ensure the safety of students and staff.
In May, the school division contacted City of Manassas staff to assist with the process and by June, lead testing was performed at all MCPS campuses. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines were carefully followed as samples were collected from water coolers, bubblers, and faucets that may be used for drinking. Samples were taken to the Prince William County Service Authority (PWCSA) who partnered with the City for laboratory analysis. A total of 98 samples were tested, 95 of which contained no measurable lead. Three samples at three different schools contained detectable lead levels with only one of those results registering above the EPA action level of 20 ppb (parts per billion). Once the results were received, the three devices were retested to ensure that no false positive occurred.
The second (verifying) test results indicated there were no devices in the schools, that exceeded the EPA safe standard of 20 ppb for schools. Although the water was deemed safe, as a proactive measure, the three devices that were retested have been taken out of service and are being replaced before the school year begins. MCPS has continued working with the local and state health departments and the City of Manassas Utilities team regarding monitoring efforts to ensure student safety.
To date, MCPS is one of the first school divisions in the region to conduct these tests. By working with the City of Manassas Utilities Department along with consultation from the Virginia Department of Health Prince William Health District, the VDH Office of Drinking Water and the Prince William County Service Authority, this voluntary lead testing is another example of government entities working together to ensure safe learning environments for students.
