Metz Teacher Receives Virginia Lottery 'Super Teacher' Award
May 4, 2017...A Metz Middle School teacher was honored today as one of eight educators in the state to receive the prestigious Virginia Lottery Super Teacher Award for 2017. Shannon Stuckey received the award in a surprise presentation in front of students, faculty and special guests.
The award, sponsored by the Virginia Lottery, the Virginia PTA and Virginia-based The Supply Room Companies, consists of a $2,000 cash prize and an additional $2,000 classroom credit from The Supply Room Companies. Ms. Stuckey teaches seventh and eighth grade reading and writing.
In the words of nominator and colleague Patrick Riley: “Many people talk about the phrase "It's all about the kids"...She lives it!...Outstanding Reading Coach offering teachers a variety of effective strategies to improve Reading skills...Mentors new ELA teachers and models superb classroom instruction...Assists interventionists with small group and one-on-one instruction...data expert for RTI committee...Lead instructor for Learning Focused training to improve lesson planning...Conduit to the community through her active involvement in the Hylton Performing Arts Center...The most valuable member of our faculty...linchpin behind improved scores in Reading and Writing over last three years.”
This year, the Lottery received more than 1,000 nominations from across Virginia. One teacher is selected from each of eight Virginia geographic regions. Ms. Stuckey represents the Northwest Virginia/Shenandoah Valley region. The 2017 Virginia Lottery Super Teachers were selected by a panel of distinguished educators and community leaders, including:

The judges selected the eight winners based on the strength of the nominations and educators’ qualities as exemplified by the nominators. Each nomination includes answers to four questions addressing everything from the teacher’s passion for and commitment to the profession, to innovation and creativity in the classroom, to how the teacher involves the students’ parents.
“The Super Teacher Awards demonstrate that we’re game for education,” said Virginia Lottery Executive Director Paula Otto. “The Lottery is committed to supporting Virginia’s public schools, and that includes recognizing outstanding Super Teachers who make such a difference in the education of Virginia’s youth.”
