School Board Names Mills as New Principal at Mayfield Intermediate
March 25, 2015… The School Board of the City of Manassas voted unanimously Tuesday to appoint Kara Mills to serve as principal at Mayfield Intermediate School. She will begin her assignment July 1.
“Mrs. Mills has a strong administrative background and has a desire to see all students succeed,” says Dr. Catherine Magouyrk, Superintendent of Schools. “Having served effectively at the elementary level, she is a passionate leader who I believe will be a great asset to the Mayfield Intermediate family.”
Mills is currently the principal at George C. Round Elementary School, a position she has held since July 2013. Prior to that, she served as the assistant principal at Jennie Dean Elementary School for two years. As principal she leads instruction in the school and is responsible for the day-to-day operations. This year, under her leadership, the Round earned the distinction of being named a “Distinguished Title I School.”
“This is a great new opportunity to serve all of the students in the City of Manassas,” says Mills. “Mayfield Intermediate is a wonderful school. I look forward to joining a team of professionals that are dedicated to the success of all students.”
Prior to her time in administration, Mills served as an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teacher at Osbourn High School. She also served as the department supervisor for the program where she worked with nine teachers and more than 500 ESOL students at Osbourn. Mills has worked in Orange County Public Schools in Florida as a 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade teacher and also has an extensive background in broadcast media, having worked at ABC and CBS news affiliates in Orlando, Florida.
Mills holds a master’s degree in Educational Leadership and a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Central Florida. She has teaching certifications in elementary education K-6, English 6-12, ESOL K-12 and Administration and Supervision K-12. She is currently completing her doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at George Washington University.
