Business Teacher Wins National Education Award
April 6, 2016...Robin Albrecht, a business teacher at Osbourn High School (OHS), has been named Secondary Teacher of the Year for 2016 by the National Business Education Association (NBEA). Each year, the NBEA Awards Program highlights excellence in business education. Albrecht was recognized for her “outstanding contributions to business education as a secondary educator" at the NBEA Awards Ceremony that took place in Las Vegas in April.
She was described by presenter and former NBEA President Marlene Stout as someone who is admired for going above and beyond for coworkers, students and the profession. In fact, Albrecht’s dedication and hard work inspired one of her former students to pursue a career as a business educator. During the ceremony, the former student recalled Albrecht as a teacher who “raised the bar higher than we thought we could go."
Albrecht began her career using typewriters to teach keyboarding, but like any great teacher, she evolved with the curriculum. Her tenacity and “teacher to the core” mentality, has allowed her to reach 3,500 students through innovative project-based learning strategies that reflect the workplace. For example, Albrecht helped establish the award-winning student-run Apple Federal Credit Union branch at OHS. She also sits on a state-wide STEM advisory board and continues to work to support Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs in MCPS.
Additionally, Albrecht is the advisor for the OHS chapter of the Future Business Leaders Association (FBLA) that won the state’s “Outstanding FBLA Chapter” award for three consecutive years. The group has led in the collection of more than 5,000 books for the “Book in Every Child’s Hand” project, and sponsored “Speed it Up! Speed Networking”—an event aimed at connecting business people in the community with high schools students. Under her leadership, students have received state, regional and national awards. Her eagerness and desire to pursue professional growth and volunteer opportunities further shows her ongoing commitment to career and community.
According to Albrecht’s colleagues, her desire to impart knowledge and inspire her students to achieve their goals has resulted in a career filled with respect, integrity and love. Albrecht was nominated for the national award by the Virginia Business Education Association (VBEA). She was named Secondary Teacher Of the Year for the the Southern Business Education Association (SBEA) in October before being recognized at the national level. Albrecht will be recognized during Superintendent Announcements and Spotlights at the April 12, 2016 School Board meeting.
