Manassas City Students Show Significant Improvement in Test Scores
August 17, 2015…The Virginia Department of Education has released the overall pass rates for Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments taken during the 2014-2015 school year. Manassas City Public Schools (MCPS) students have achieved remarkable growth in their performance.
“I am very proud of our students, teachers, and staff,” said Dr. Catherine Magouyrk, Superintendent of Schools. “The data shows that our students made greater gains this year than in previous years.”
The Virginia SOL assessments measure academic success of students and evaluates their progress in the four core academic areas of English, history/social science, mathematics and science. As a Division, MCPS students demonstrated improvement in the overall pass rates in 24 out of 28 SOL tests taken this past school year 2014-2015 as compared to 12 out of 33 tests the previous school year 2013-2014.
Students in several subgroups made significant jumps in achievement from 2013-14 to 2014-15. In reading, all subgroups improved by an average of 10%. In math, all subgroups improved by an average of 12%, and all but one subgroup matched or outperformed the state averages.
Division-wide, SOL test scores reflect the following:
- English: Reading – MCPS students experienced a six-point improvement over last year.
- English: Writing – MCPS students saw a two point increase over the previous year.
- History and Social Sciences – MCPS students earned a three-point gain over last year’s score.
- Mathematics – MCPS students jumped seven points from 71% to 78%. Additionally, Math scores have climbed 24% since 2012.
- Science – Students have remained stable at 74% in Science over the last three years.
“This year’s progress is due to the work that our students and staff, do every day in every classroom across the division.” Magouyrk said. “Although we still have gaps and challenges in some areas, our focus remains on seeing success in achievement for all students.”
