Weems receives Common Sense School Status
February 11, 2021 -- Weems Elementary School has been recognized as a Common Sense School, an achievement acknowledging the school’s commitment to creating a culture of digital citizenship. At Weems, students in pre-k through fourth grade explore digital citizenship resources from Common Sense Education to learn internet safety, protecting online reputations and personal privacy, media balance, managing online relationships and media literacy.
Principal Dr. Zella Jones said Weems is happy to receive the recognition.
“Faculty and staff have incorporated the Common Sense lessons to help students understand the importance of good digital citizenship,” she explained. “Our goal is for students to use technology to learn, create, and to explore in a safe manner.”
Common Sense is an independent, nonprofit with a mission to provide K-12 schools the resources necessary to prepare students for success in the 21st century. Through the Common Sense Education platform, schools, students and their families thrive in a world of media and technology. The lessons provide students with relatable examples that prepare them to think critically and use technology responsibly. Subjects discussed during digital citizenship lessons include cyberbullying, plagiarism and loss of privacy.
“Weems is excited to have this recognition,” said Annette Bruner, Weems’ Instructional Technology Training Specialist. “Our Weems classroom teachers and librarian have integrated digital citizenship lessons during virtual learning this school year to help our Weems Wildcats become responsible and safe digital citizens.”
This recognition acknowledges Weems’ commitment to helping students build lifelong habits and skills that are essential for their well-being and their ability to succeed in a tech-driven world.
"We applaud the faculty and staff of Weems Elementary for embracing digital citizenship as an important part of their students' education," said Liz Kline, vice president of education programs at Common Sense Education. "Weems deserves high praise for giving its students the foundational skills they need to compete and succeed in the 21st-century workplace and participate ethically in society at large."
