Partners bring Math Game Night to Georgetown South
December 2, 2019 -- On November 22, 2019, Manassas City Public Schools (MCPS) collaborated with the Georgetown South Community Center to host its first Math Game Night. During the event, MCPS math professionals and other volunteers coordinated games and provided resources to families in hopes of increasing students’ opportunities to learn mathematics at home.
The event was open to students in grades K-8 who live in Georgetown South Community and their families. Students used math to play a variety of games, merging both fun and learning.
“We believe playing games aids in developing math skills the same way reading books develops reading skills,” said Ray Singletary, MCPS Math Specialist.
Games for the event were provided by MCPS, Mathnasium, and George Mason University. Sponsors of the event also provided raffle prizes. The event was made possible by volunteers from MCPS’ mathematics coaching team, Metz Middle School, Osbourn High School, the Georgetown South community and George Mason University.
