Summer Art Symposium Sparks Interest Among Students, Parents
August 14, 2017...Manassas City Public Schools was awarded a matching grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts to offer a Summer Art Symposium for rising 6th through 12th graders.
A first for the district, the week-long symposium was held at Metz Middle School and exposed participants to various art mediums such as, string art, painting, cyanotype (photograph negative) and collage. The week ended with an exhibit for families to see what students had learned during the symposium and meet with the teachers (see photos below).
The division is hoping to offer the camp next year, and student and parents agree. A post-symposium survey filled out by both parents and students indicated that nearly 86 percent would like to participate in the symposium next summer.
Additionally, over 50 percent of participants noted in the survey they are more likely to try an art class at school following the symposium.
