Home Instruction
In accordance with Section 22.1-254.1 of the Code of Virginia, any parent may elect to provide home instruction for his or her school-age child in lieu of school attendance.
When a parent elects to provide home instruction for their school-year-aged child, it is up to the parent to develop and deliver the curriculum in any matter they choose. Manassas City Public Schools does not provide curriculum and/or educational resources for home-instructed students. If you choose to home instruct your child, please notify MCPS of your intent by submitting a 2022-2023 SY Intent to Homeschool to CJones@mcpsva.org.
Qualification by Parent or Guardian (one of four required)
- The parent or guardian holds a high school diploma or higher credential
- The parent or guardian is a teacher of qualifications prescribed by the Virginia Board of Education.
- The parent or guardian provides a study or curriculum, which may be delivered through a correspondence course, distance learning program, or any other way.
- The parent or guardian provides evidence that he or she is able to provide an adequate education for the child.

Homebound Instruction
-
Homebound Instruction may be provided for Manassas City Public Schools students who are physically or emotionally unable to attend school as certified by a physician, or in the case of psychological/emotional illness, a psychiatrist or licensed clinical psychologist.
Homebound Instruction will be provided only in cases which are reimbursable by the state. Any exceptions must be approved by the Superintendent/designee. Homebound Instruction is intended to be temporary in nature and should not be used to replace classroom instruction.

Special Education
The Department of Special Education supports its mission by:
complying with the provisions of IDEA of 1997(Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 1997) and the IDEIA of 2004 (Individuals with Disabilities Improvement Act of 2004) appropriately identifying students with disabilities based on federal and state criteria providing high quality, specialized instructional programs utilizing supplemental materials and research-based strategies facilitating a collaborative team among parents, staff, and students to build a positive learning environment promoting a strengths-based approach to build on success supporting the development of knowledge and skills to prepare students to be college-bound and/or career ready in the following areas: academics; social/emotional; behavioral; communication; fine and gross motor; organization; transition goals; and functional life skills.

School Social Workers
The School Social Worker integrates training in education and social work, knowledge and skills in curriculum, learning styles, family dynamics and behavior management and applies it to children who are experiencing academic and behavioral difficulties.

Student Health Services
The primary purpose of Student Health Services is to protect and promote health, facilitate optimal development, and advance academic success for all students. MCPS school nurses bridge health care and educational needs, provide care coordination, and collaborate to design systems that enhance each student’s development. School nurses strive to enhance the educational environment by collaborating with students, families, providers, and school staff. Health Services provided by school nurses during the school day may include:
- Provide acute and/or emergency health care for students
- Monitor for and help to control communicable diseases
- Collaborate to provide Health Screenings/related parent information in compliance with state requirements
- Annual health screenings are scheduled within the first 60 administrative working days of the school year. In the event a defect is found, the parent/guardian will be notified.
- Children new to the division as well as those in grades K, 3, 7, and 10 will be screened for hearing and vision. Vision and hearing screenings may be requested at other grade levels.
- New students, K-3, will be screened for speech as well as fine and gross motor skills.
- Scoliosis Information is linked and distributed to parents of students in grades 5-10.
- Information on eating disorders.
- Review student physical examination and immunization records for compliance with Virginia Department of Health requirements for student enrollment
- Plan and collaborate to provide in-school care for students with chronic or ongoing health care needs
- Promote health and safety
- Supervise the administration of medications
- Train school staff to provide health care services/procedures as appropriate
- Provide health care counseling and education
- Facilitate student access to health care resources/providers and communication between school, families, and providers
- Monitor health status and trends
Parents are encouraged to keep the school informed of current contact information including phone numbers for work, cell, home, pagers, or any other means whereby they can be contacted during the school day should the need arise. Emergencies can occur at any time. It is urgent that your child's school be able to reach parents and caregivers.
Collaboration and communication with parents, guardians, and physicians is essential for caring for our students successfully Please update your information in the Parent Portal at the beginning of each school year or when necessary.

Each school clinic is staffed with a full-time registered nurse(s). They provide health screenings, assessments for chronic and acute illness, and first aid for school-related injuries. The Department of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) supports its mission by:
providing English Learners (ELs) access to core content and instruction while supporting their language acquisition process.
