Degrees and Certifications:
Mrs. Cara Mitchell
Hello friends! Welcome to the counseling department! I am your school counselor. I love working with your children, and do my best to meet the needs of every one of them. I believe in kindness and positivity, and strive to bring that to Weems every day!
I studied Psychology at Pennsylvania State University and then received my Master’s Degree in School Counseling at Marymount University in Arlington, VA. I have been the counselor at Weems Elementary for the past ten years. I have experience working as a co-counselor in at a private therapy group, as well as a community mentor.
What is the importance of an Elementary School Counselor? According to the American School Counselor Association: “Elementary school years set the tone for developing the knowledge, attitudes and skill necessary for children to become healthy, competent and confident learners. Through a comprehensive developmental school counseling program, school counselors work as a team with the school staff, parents and the community to create a caring climate and atmosphere. By providing education, prevention, early identification and intervention, school counselors can help all children achieve academic success. The elementary school counselor holds a master’s degree and required state certification in school counseling.”
