BA Journalism/Minor in English MA Communication/Minors in English, Higher Education Virginia State License - English teacher. ESOL certified
* Introduction: My name is Miss Owens, and I teach 7th grade Integrated Humanties and ESL (English as a Second Language).
* Educational Background & Endorsement: I have a bachelor's degree in journalism, during which time I interned with a local newspaper in Lockport, NY - the Lockport Union-Sun & Journal - while also writing for and editing the school newspapers at Niagara County Community College and Buffalo State College. My master's degree is in communication from the University at Buffalo, focusing on interpersonal and intercultural communication with a minor in higher education. During both undergraduate and graduate studies, I minored in English, which enabled me to pursue an alternative certification program in Texas to become a licensed English teacher for grades 7-12. I received my ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) cerificate in 2017.
* Experience: I have been teaching since 1999, starting at the college level in Buffalo, NY, teaching various communication courses. In Texas, I taught high school English, grades 9-11, and a writing lab. Here in Virginia, I've taught English as a second language at the Islamic Saudi Academy in Alexandria. I've been with Metz Middle School since 2014, starting as a Reading Interventionist. In the past, I have been a fast-food restaurant manager, restaurant owner, interior design office manager, pre-school aide, worked in a printing and mailing, and a waitress. These experiences along with my educational background allow me to throw in real-life examples and experience as I teach. Besides teaching college level classes, I have also been an academic advisor for undergraduates in communication while working on my M.A. at the University at Buffalo. I have also been teaching Principles of Communication, Public Speaking, and Intercultural Communication courses for Nova since 2015.
* Classroom Goals: My goals include helping students realize their potential and gain a true interest in both reading and writing, two areas that will help them succeed in any future aspirations.
