I have been with Metz since 1999. I am a special education teacher who teaches in a classroom for students with Autism. I teach the 7th and 8th grade SOLs in English and math classes.. I graduated from Ohio University, in Athens, Ohio, in 1981 with a B.S.Ed in general education endorsed in English, Speech, Reading and Journalism 9-12. I received my master's degree in Special Education K-12 from George Mason University and am endorsed as a Library Media Specialist K-12 through Old Dominion University.
I am the sponsor of the after school club "Just Because."
I am married, with four adult children who all went through the MCPS school system and received excellent educations. We are blessed to have amazing and intelligent children, however, two of my children were found to need special education services, one for learning disabilities of dyslexia and dysgraphia and the other is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)(formerly Asperger's Syndrome) and all four have earned college degrees. This is important to know because I am not just a teacher who chose to teach in the field of special education...after being a general ed teacher, I became a special ed teacher to be the best advocate I could for my own children. It also means that I have been a parent on the "other side of the IEP table," I understand the concerns and have survived parenting a child with ASD and there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
