Ms. Megan Barbour
I joined the OHS team at the start of the 2019-20 school year as a Special Education Teacher. After spending 19 years at Key Center School in Fairfax County, it was time to shorten my commute and explore other opportunities closer to home!
During the school year, I had the pleasure of educating an outstanding group of students in the area of Empolyment Readiness. The objective of the course is to develop good work habits that can be practiced at home, school, and a variety of worksites within our community. Students developed their own business: Kool Kidz $HOP. This student run business gives students an opportunity to work on communication skills with customers, practice counting and practicing, money skills, working as a team, and much more. Students also took great pride in making their products and working together to brainstorm ideas, vote and graph results. Students also discussed and conveyed job interests through a variety of activities. From their preferences, students were selected to generalize their skills at the following worksites: Grace UMC, Manassas City Animal Shelter, Tuscani Grill, Philadelphia Tavern, Kerbobble Toys, and Dean Elementary School. These work sites gave students opportunities to practice work skills learned in the classroom in realistic setttings. Students also increased their in-school jobs by offering the following: mail delivery, recycling program, cleaning in the school library, laminating, and making Ellison Press Shapes.
Beginning Monday, students in Employment Readiness will have access to materials related to the course. Additionally, I will have office hours on Tuesday from 10:00-10:30 and Thursday from 2:00-2:30. Students will receive the log in information from their case managers.
