Karen Etherington

My name is Karen Etherington, and I currently provide gifted education services for all MCPS Gifted and Talented 3rd and 4th grade students.  Identified 3rd and 4th grade GT students visit our GT Resource Center at Haydon Elementary from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM one day each week.

My educational background is somewhat diverse.  I hold a Bachelor of Individualized Studies degree in Education and Educational Technology from George Mason University.  I also hold a Master's Degree in K-8 Science Education for Walden University and earned my endorsement in K-12 Gifted Education from James Madison University.  I became a National Board Certified teacher in 2007 and am certified to teach Project Lead the Way Robotics and Design and Modeling.

The 2018-19 school year marks my 30th year teaching in Manassas City Schools.  I worked in special education at Round Elementary from 1989 to 1999 then taught 4th and 5th grades at Jennie Dean Elementary until moving to Mayfield Intermediate in 2006.  There I taught 6th grade math and science for seven years, 5th grade for one year and PLTW STEM for two years.  This will be my third year as the Gifted and Talented Specialist teaching our 3rd and 4th grade students at the GT Resource Center.

I am looking forward to a very exciting and productive year with your children.  As we engage in a variety of intersting and fun activities that address diverse topics, we will also focus on developing research skills, working cooperatively, fostering creativity and imagination, and becoming technologically ready for the future!
