School Counseling Mission:
The mission of the Jennie Dean Elementary School counseling program is to collaborate with educators, parents/guardians, and the community to provide high-quality, comprehensive school counseling services accessible to all students. The school counselors at Jennie Dean will strive to ensure that all students:
- identify and develop their skills, talents, and career interests; and
- develop strategies for healthy decision-making and improve social/emotional competencies, effective communication, time management, and organization skills
School Counseling Vision:
The Jennie Dean Elementary School counseling program envisions a future where all students are middle school, high school, and college and/or career ready. Every student will obtain the academic, career, and social-emotional skills to attain their optimum potential. All students will learn to be responsible, respectful, and productive citizens of society and meet the demands of the 21st century. Students will learn to become life-long innovative learners who self-advocate and exercise strong problem-solving skills. Additionally, all students will become global thinkers who take responsibility for their actions and are able to act independently while understanding the importance of collaborating with others.
School Counselors’ Beliefs Statement:
The school counselors at Jennie Dean Elementary School (Dean ES) believe:
- All students can achieve academic success and become productive citizens of society.
- All students, regardless of ethnic/racial, cultural, socioeconomic, and religious backgrounds, sexual orientation, or physical and mental abilities, are entitled to a supportive and safe learning environment.
- The school counseling program is crucial to developing students’ academic, career, and social/emotional needs through its implementation of evidence-based interventions.
- Student needs are best met through a data-driven comprehensive school counseling program in which collaboration with families, staff, administrators, government agencies, and community organizations is not only encouraged, but achieved.
- The counselors should be accessible to all students and effectively advocate for student success in a reasonable timeframe.
- The counselors should endeavor to develop healthy and professionally appropriate relationships with students and provide students with the support they need.
- A comprehensive school counseling program is created to meet students’ unique academic and developmental demands, identified through needs assessments and translated into attainable goals.
- The counselors should design, implement, and evaluate the comprehensive school counseling program to ensure its alignment with the visions and missions of Manassas City Public Schools (MCPS) and Dean ES.
- The American School Counselor Association’s ethical standards must drive the work of Dean’s school counselors and counseling program at large.
- The counselors should routinely engage in professional development activities.
