The School Board of the City of Manassas, Virginia has determined that it is in the best interests of the School Board and the citizens of the City of Manassas to purchase certain real property (having tax map number 111-15-00-E11) located at 8700 Centreville Road in the City of Manassas, Virginia, a portion of which is currently being used as the site of various school system offices.
Spring 2022 - The School Board of the City of Manassas was approached by the owner of the existing building (housing our current Central Office) that he would like to give us first right of refusal to purchase the building located at 8700 Centreville Road.
June 29, 2022 - MCPS Governance Team Leaders met with the Mayor, Vice Mayor, and City Manager to inform them of the opportunity.
July 12, 2022 - Andy Hawkins, Executive Director of Finance & Operations, presented the School Board with information regarding the renovation versus purchasing of the new central office building.
July 19, 2022 - The School Board of the City of Manassas continued the discussion on the renovation versus purchasing of the new central office building.
July 21, 2022 – Manassas City Council and School Board met to review the terms & conditions of the purchase of 8700 Centreville Road.
August 9, 2022 - The School Board of the City of Manassas voted to “approve Resolution R2022-03 Authorizing the Purchase of Real Property pending Final appropriation approval by the City Council of the City of Manassas and amendment of the budget.”
September 19, 2022 - At a Committee of the Whole - The Manassas City Council tabled a public hearing for the purchase of 8700 Centreville Road “to be discussed at a future meeting.”
September 26, 2022 – The Manassas City Council held a public hearing about the proposed amendment to the FY23 Operating Budget for the Schools Real Property Purchase. There were no comments from the public and council voted to leave the public hearing open and continue the discussion at the October 24 meeting.
October 24, 2022 – At the Manassas City Council meeting, the public hearing from September 26 was closed. There were no speakers from the public on the matter.
November 21, 2022 – The Manassas City Council and the School Board of Manassas City held a joint meeting to discuss our Capital Improvements Plan (CIP) as it relates to the new Jennie Dean Elementary and the purchase of 8700 Centreville Road.
Throughout this process, the building's owner has extended the offer to the School Board of Manassas City several times.
The School Board of Manassas City remains steadfast in its decision to purchase the currently leased property and urges the City Council to make timely decisions to appropriate the funds. We requested to meet with Manassas City Council at an earlier date, but that request was denied, opting for this joint meeting (11/21/22) to discuss.
