Grade 5 and 6 GT
In grades 5 and 6, students are clustered into designated GT homerooms. Students may also attend pull‐out time with intellectual peers for one class period per week at their intermediate schools. The gifted resource teacher works with students through interdisciplinary project-based learning, further developing critical, creative, and research skills. An alternative service option that students may participate in is GIEPs. Gifted individualized education plans will be implemented for all intermediate students that do not participate in the pullout sessions. Instruction in grades 5 and 6 is presented in team- teaching format. All core classes provided to the GT homeroom student are differentiated for the gifted students. All content, all assessments, all activities, and all resources are designed to meet the needs of gifted learners daily.

Advanced Math 6
Advanced Math 6 is an Algebra 1 preparatory course for 6th graders that have proved ready for advancement in mathematics. The Math 6 curriculum is compacted, and students are guided through mastery of Math 6, Math 7, and Math 8 concepts. 5th grade student performance, teacher recommendation, and a screener exam helps place students in the appropriate math for 6th grade.
This advanced course is accelerated at a much faster pace than traditional Math 6. The acceleration allows for future exploration into higher level math courses. Students who successfully complete this course may apply for the division’s IMS Program and may be eligible for Algebra 1 as a 7th grade student. This puts them on an accelerated pathway to participate in advanced coursework throughout middle and high school, opening up the possibility of admittance to the Governor’s School at Innovation Park.
Participating in our Advanced Math 6 class may require more time and effort to uphold a high standard of work, and students must be willing to make this commitment. Some possible course requirements are listed below:
- Manage a demanding workload.
- Be prepared to complete assignments and projects at home, as well as potentially spend extra time reviewing materials learned in class.
- Budget time for both school and extracurricular activities.
