The mission of the physical education program is to help students learn the skills necessary for performing a variety of physical activities and understand the benefits of achieving and maintaining a physically active lifestyle and good health for a lifetime.
Virginia requires all students to receive health and physical education instruction at all instructional levels in grades K-10.
Course content for health and physical education, including family life education and driver education, is identified in Virginia Board of Education regulations and in the Virginia health and physical education requirements for high school graduation.
The health and physical education program is designed to teach students the skills, knowledge, and attitudes essential to live a healthy lifestyle and select healthy and safe behaviors.
Physical education provides the opportunity for the acquisition and application of essential knowledge and skills in the following:
- Motor Skill Development
- Anatomical Basis of Movement
- Fitness Planning
- Social Development
- Energy Balance
Health education provides the knowledge base and critical thinking skills necessary for students to make informed choices and to exert positive control over their lives. The health content includes the following:
- Substance Abuse Prevention, Opioids and Safe Use Medication
- Body Systems
- Community Involvement
- Healthy Environment
- Health Promotion including Nutrition and Physical Activity
- Safety and Injury Prevention (CPR and First Aid - 9th Grade)
- Social/Emotional/Mental Health
- Violence Prevention and Healthy Relationships
- Health Careers (10th Grade)
- Family Life Education in grades 8-10
WELNET is an easy-to-use, web-based software application that was developed as a tool for students to understand their health and fitness and build a personal portfolio. WELNET consists of seven modules that students may be completing assignments in: fitness, assessments, behavior logs, rubrics, wearables and online learning.
