3rd grade PLTW Modules
Degrees and Certifications:
Science of Flight
This is the first of three modules third grade will complete this year. This module will take place every day during the students' science time from Oct. 15th-Nov. 16th. However, the students will be integrating their science with technology, engineering, math, and language arts. They will also be using the Innovator Skills of collaboration, communication, critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving throughout this module.
In this module, students learn about the forces involved in flight as well as Newton’s Laws of Motion. They design, build, and test an experimental model glider to find out how air and other forces affect its flight. Students discover aeronautics alongside the story characters of Angelina, Mylo, and Suzi and are inspired by the characters’ desire to use their skills to help those in need. Students apply the design process to the problem of delivering aid to an area where supplies must be airlifted in and dropped to the ground from an aircraft. Throughout this module, we will be interweaving the Virginia Standards of Learning for science, language arts, math, and social studies.
