Mrs. Shelly Ryan-Schrader

Greetings! My name is Shelly Ryan-Schrader and this is my fourth year as a librarian for MCPS. I come to Weems Elementary School with a Master of Science, M.Ed. degree, in School Librarianship from Longwood University and a Master of Science degree from Cortland University in Reading Education. I have worked as an Elementary Librarian for Fairfax County Public Schools, Fredericksburg City Public Schools, and have also worked for the Gainesville Middle School library for Prince William County Public Schools. My goal is to continue this year to ensure that students are effective users of ideas and information, to empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information.  With a firm stance in the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) six common beliefs, one of those beliefs is a strong Reading program. Reading is the core of personal and academic competency for our students. In the school library, learners engage with relevant information resources and digital learning opportunities in a culture of reading.

I look forward to having an exciting library program that will include the Virginia Readers’ Choice program, the Virginia Reads program, book fairs, MakerSpacers activities, author visits, PBL projects and more.  When I am not working in the library, I enjoy family time with my husband Ernest and son Christopher. I also enjoy reading, running, beach time, traveling, and walking our Yorkshire terrier, Zach. I am so very excited to be here and look forward to a fabulous school year!
