School Board Standing Committees

There are five (5) Standing Committees of the School Board. The Committee members are appointed by the Chairman of the Board. Please review the School Board Calendar for dates of Committee meetings. All School Board Committee meetings are open to the public.

Academic Committee
The role of the Academics Committee is to:
- Oversee the review of courses and testing protocols and ensure they are in accordance with requirements established by the Virginia Department of Education.
- Establish priorities in review of courses in consultation with the Superintendent and the administration.
- Set course review goals and schedules.
- Oversee and approve textbook adoption and resource adoption for all academic subjects.
- Evaluate suggestions for changes to, or the elimination or implementation of courses.
- Work with the Superintendent, administration and staff to establish a draft academic year calendar.
- Review and/or recommend policies to the policy committee
- Other items as assigned by the School Board or the School Board Chairman

Education Support Committee
The role of the Education Support Committee:
- Oversee the review of all policies related to Facilities, Transportation, Technology, and Food Service Departments to insure alignment with all federal and state mandates as informed by the VSBA and MCPS staff
- Assist staff in establishing long range facility planning for the school division to meet current and future student instructional needs
- Review with staff all facility planning to include all redistricting, new school facilities, and major renovations
- Review all Transportation, Food Service, and Technology (non-instructional) initiatives
- Oversee any naming of any facility in the Division
- Recommend actions to the full School Board based on Committee meeting discussions
- Other items as assigned by the School Board or the School Board Chairman

Finance Committee
The role of the Finance Committee:
- Oversee the review of all financial policies and ensure conformance with all federal and state mandates as informed by the VSBA
- Review and consult with staff about all financial matters for the school division to include:

- Formulation of the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP)
- Formulation of the Five-Year Forecast
- Review of all year-end reconciliations for all funds and year-end carryover requests
- Annual financial budget development
- Annual budget presentation to City Council
- City Funding Formula formulation in consultation with City Council
- Review of Independent Audit Reports

Personnel Committee
The role of the Personnel Committee includes, but is not necessarily limited to:
- Oversee the review of all personnel-related policies to ensure conformance with all federal and state mandates as informed by the VSBA
- Maintain and coordinate new School Board Member orientation and handbook
- Maintain and coordinate School Board Student Representative Program
- Recommend actions to the full School Board based on committee meeting discussions
- Other items as assigned by the School Board or the School Board Chairman
The Personnel Committee DOES NOT exist to intervene directly in school situations nor manage the interface between Human Resources Department and Staff, nor does it provide managerial oversight to the division (that is the work of the Superintendent and his/her staff).

Policy Committee
The role of the Policy Committee is to:
- Oversee the review of policies adopted by the School Board, and ensure they are in accordance with federal and state mandates and informed by the Virginia School Board Association (VSBA)
- Establish priorities in policy review and adoption, in consultation with the Superintendent and the administration
- Set goals and schedules for policy review and adoption
- Review recommended Board action on policies not specifically in the purview of another School Board Committee
- Evaluate suggestions for School Board policy and recommend development of policies for adoption
- Other items as assigned by the School Board or the School Board Chairman
