Inclement Weather Procedures

  • When, in the judgment of the Superintendent/designee, conditions exist which are hazardous to the health and safety of students and employees, the Superintendent/designee shall take the appropriate action by:

    • Delaying the opening of schools;
    • Dismissing students early from schools;
    • Closing school or division for the entire day, or
    • Taking other action necessary to safeguard the health and safety of students and employees.

    The decision to close schools for an entire day or to delay school openings will be made as early as possible prior to scheduled starting times. Except in unusual circumstances demanding emergency measures, the decision will be made prior to 5:30 a.m. on the morning of a closing or delay in opening, so that the information can be broadcast on the news media prior to 6:00 a.m.

    Two-Hour Delayed Opening

    • Elementary, intermediate, middle and high school students arrive two hours late.
    • Morning buses will be two hours late. Students will use regular bus stops unless noted otherwise.
    • Field trips may be canceled pending weather conditions.

    • Lunch will be served at all schools.
    • The AlphaBest before school program will open at 8:30 a.m. for all elementary schools.
    • GT Center classes at Haydon for third or fourth graders will be canceled for that day.

    • Students will be dismissed early as determined by the Superintendent/designee.
    • AlphaBest afterschool program for all elementary schools will not be open.
    • Lunch will be served unless notified otherwise by the Superintendent/designee.

Inclement Weather During Distance Learning

  • December 2020

    Weather Procedures During Distance Learning:

    The safety of all students and staff remains our priority. Although we have 100 percent of students participating in distance learning, there are on-site tasks that occur daily to ensure distance learning is successful.

    As forecasters are calling for potential inclement weather this week, and if the predictions affect our immediate area, it is possible that Manassas City Public Schools will announce a Code Blue day.

    While this may be the case for the pending hazardous weather this week, as we move forward throughout the winter months, in addition to safety, ensuring that we meet the length of the school term and core instruction state-required minimums will be considered in our decision making. We also recognize that there may be times when other factors may affect our decision, such as local power outages or vendor software that would hinder virtual instruction.

    Should the decision be made to announce Code Blue, students may use the time to optionally work on current assignments or get caught up on missing work. Students will not be assigned required work on Code Blue days, and teachers will take the missed time into consideration of deadlines or test scheduling.

    Teaching staff may use this time to enter data, grade student papers, or otherwise supplement their normal work efforts (per the MCPS telework regulation GCBD-R). These actions would be strictly voluntary.

    Manassas City Public Schools will continue using the division’s phone and email notification system to inform parents and employees of weather-related closings and delayed school openings. It is our goal to notify the public by 6 a.m.
