Mrs. Akisha Mackritis
Greetings! My name is Akisha Mackritis, and I teach ESOL 2/ESOL English 9. This is my second year with Manassas City Public Schools. Prior to coming to MCPS, I worked for five years with Prince William County Schools working as a reading tutor, Adult Education (ABE/GED) teacher, and long term substitute teacher. I also served as an adult literacy and English language learner tutor with the Literacy Volunteers of America, Prince William.
My teaching philosophy is one that believes there is room for everything in the classroom. Learning can be both organized and organic, memorization and inquiry can co-exist. Historical facts and figures, the “great books”, and contemporary works are all worthy of our attention. In my philosophy, the teacher plays a crucial role in the classroom. A teacher is not in the classroom solely to supervise students and hold space, but to serve as a guide and facilitator of the learning process. I am here to encourage collaboration between students, to learn the most effective ways to teach students by watching how they respond to what we are doing. I believe the classroom is a representation of the world. In it we have the opportunity not only to teach information, but to teach about community, citizenship and how to live together.
I am looking forward to working with your child this school year.
